Planning approval granted for landmark Thanet Health Campus

~ Proposals praised at planning committee for being ‘superbly put together’ and ‘well-thought out’

On Wednesday (26 June), Thanet District Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to give outline planning permission to the long-awaited Thanet Health Campus, delivering a ‘once-in-a-generation’ project for the local area.

The landmark development, Quinn Estates’ first in Thanet, was praised for being ‘superbly put together and ‘well-thought out’ delivering ‘multiple benefits’ to the local community.

Thanet Health Campus will include up to 9,253sqm of commercial floorspace, as well as a comprehensive range of primary care-based services in purpose-built new premises. Other elements of the scheme include an 80-bed care home, a 70-flat extra care facility and a children’s nursery.

Mark Quinn, CEO and Chairman of Quinn Estates, said: “We are excited to gain planning permission for Thanet Health Campus, which marks our first development in Thanet. Not only will this be an exemplary health campus which will enhance the healthcare provision for local people, it also represents significant employment opportunities. Alongside the jobs created by the medical campus, there will also be a significant boost in employment from the commercial element of the scheme.

“We’re also extremely proud that the scheme is 100% affordable housing, including an extra care facility for the most vulnerable members of the community. Quinn Estates is looking forward to bringing forward this project and making a real difference to the people of Thanet.”

The plans to move The Grange Practice from its existing site in Ramsgate to a new, larger purpose-built building at the health campus site off New Haine Road near Westwood Cross will provide a major boost to the area’s primary health provision, meeting the needs of a growing population.

Julie Hill, Practice Manager for The Grange Practice, said: “We are absolutely delighted by the decision to approve the Health Campus. Our primary problem as a surgery currently is that we have simply run out of space to serve the needs of our patients and ensure we continue to be able to care for an increasing population.

“We will be able to employ more GPs and nurses as well as expanding our community clinical team, ultrasound and dermatology services to reduce waiting times. Co-location with the other health users on the campus will also offer a fantastic opportunity for joint work and a more integrated population health approach for patients.

“Patients already on our list will be able to remain on our list once we move and we are also discussing with East Cliff Practice, which will remain at Montefiore Medical Centre, about the way forward – including minimising any impact on those unable to access the new facilities.”

This decision follows the submission of an outline planning application in December 2023 for the entire New Haine Road site. A detailed planning application for the new medical centre is expected to be submitted later this year.

Quinn Estates Sponsors Chilham Tennis Club For Fifth Year

Kent-based mixed-use developer Quinn Estates is continuing its banner sponsorship arrangement with Chilham Tennis Club for a fifth year, as part of its commitment to securing the future of Kent’s sports facilities.

Situated in Branch Road, Chilham, the club has served the local community since it was formed in 1974. The club is run completely by volunteers and offers three hardcourts, two of which are floodlit, and a clubhouse.

All ages and abilities use the club, with coaching sessions from juniors upwards, led by club coach Danny Wynne, and sessions are provided to Chilham Primary School. The club also has ladies’, mixed and two men’s teams competing in local Kent Leagues, involving competitive matches with visiting clubs from across the county

Quinn Estates’ 2024 club sponsorship marks its fifth successive year of supporting the club and is part of the company’s culture of commitment to supporting and enhancing community facilities across the region.

Recent years have seen major improvements at Chilham Tennis Club, including the construction of the third court and clubhouse, followed by the replacement of outdated halogen floodlights with new, brighter energy-efficient LED lighting.

Speaking for the Club, William Hinckley said: “As the Club is run entirely by volunteers, we cannot be more grateful to Quinn Estates for their commitment to Chilham Tennis Club.

“Quinn Estates’ banner sponsorship has enabled us to make improvements and our new and updated facilities continue to be well received and regularly in use, contributing to the health, wellbeing and happiness of so many local people. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of Quinn Estates, which we sincerely hope will continue in the years to come.”

Mark Quinn, CEO and Chairman of Quinn Estates, said “We’re proud to continue our sponsorship of Chilham Tennis Club, as part of our commitment to safeguarding local sport in Kent.

“We work tirelessly to create a legacy of community improvement, from the sports facilities we create, to the sponsorship we donate. We’re pleased to be able to support local clubs like Chilham Tennis Club, who do such good work in the community to give people of all ages, abilities and background access to sports facilities. We understand the impact that our support makes and are delighted to work together with them.”

Quinn Estates Sponsors Wye Cricket Club For Third Year

With the cricket season set to start in a matter of weeks, Kent-based mixed-use developer Quinn Estates has announced its sponsorship of Wye Cricket Club’s senior sides for its 2024 season.

Founded in 1882, Wye Cricket Club sits at the heart of the village off Cherry Garden Lane and is one of the most picturesque venues for cricket in Kent. Quinn Estates’ 2024 club sponsorship marks its third successive year of supporting the club and is part of the company’s culture of commitment to supporting and enhancing community facilities across the region.

Club honorary secretary Tim Mitford-Slade said: “Investment from Quinn Estates has come at such a crucial point in our plans to become a true village community club, with a programme of cricket for all ages and abilities serving Wye and the surrounding rural areas. We can now invest in a new net facility, upgrade the scoreboard so it can provide remote electronic scoring for all formats of cricket and provide new kit and training facilities.

“As the Club is run entirely by volunteers, we cannot be more grateful of Quinn Estates for their commitment to Wye Cricket Club and the investment they have made in our local community.”

Mark Quinn, CEO and Chairman of Quinn Estates, said “We understand the value and power that sponsorship brings to clubs like Wye. We’re proud to help secure the future of local sport in Kent.

“Our ambition is to create a legacy of community improvement, and that is evident in the financial support we provide to local groups, as well as the many sports facilities, play areas and open spaces we create.”

Now a thriving community club with three senior teams and a successful junior set up, just a few years ago the fortunes of Wye Cricket Club looked very different.

Having enjoyed success in the Kent Village League, winning back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016 to reach Division 1, with no commercial investment and the departure of several senior players, Wye fell on hard times and had to withdraw from the League in 2018, playing only friendly matches over the next three years.

Club Honorary Secretary Tim Mitford-Slade commented, “In hindsight, this is perhaps the best thing to have happened to the Club in recent times, as it allowed the Juniors to find their feet and by now those fledgling ten year olds were starting to play senior cricket, and thriving in a small, inclusive and highly supportive environment.

“Wind the clock forward five years, and Wye Cricket Club now has two senior sides playing League cricket, a Sunday Development side to support our youngsters to step up into adult cricket and a thriving Junior Section. We are very proud of what we have achieved.”

Quinn Estates wins housebuilder award at the ‘Oscars of Housebuilding’

Quinn Estates wins housebuilder award for supporting local skills growth at the ‘Oscars of Housebuilding’

Last night (Thursday 2 November), Quinn Estates was recognised with another industry win at the Housebuilder Awards 2023. The Kent-based mixed-use developer was presented with Best Community Initiative for addressing the local skills need with the first of its kind college building at the EKC Civil Engineering Training Centre (East Kent Colleges Group) in Hersden, one of the most deprived wards in Kent.

The winners were announced by host comedian Joel Dommett at a prestigious black-tie event at the InterContinental London – The O2, which also included a drinks reception and dinner. The awards recognise the best in the housebuilding industry from design and sustainability to community impact and regeneration. Considered to be the Oscars of housebuilding, the Housebuilder Awards is voted on by industry leaders.

Located on the southern side of the A28 off Island Road in Hersden, Kent, The EKC Group Civil Engineering Training Centre is focused on construction and civil engineering. It was built in response to the national skills gap to ensure the development of the right skills locally to deliver economic growth.

A report by the Construction Skills Network in June 2022 found that more than a quarter of a million extra construction workers will be needed by 2026 to meet projected demands in the UK civil engineering sector, so this centre, a first of its kind, is a hugely positive and innovative step in addressing this.

The ground-breaking centre has been funded in its entirety by Quinn Estates and gifted to East Kent Colleges Group. Known as the EKC Civil Engineering Training Centre, it will cater for around 300 students at any time, studying courses ranging from construction certifications to full civil engineering apprenticeships. The 3,000 sq. ft facility includes a series of outdoor ‘stations’ where students can develop skills, including drainage and bricklaying. Inside is a training centre, office and other facilities.

This award win recognises the impact the facility will have on local people, with judges praising the development.

Huw Evans, Managing Director of Quinn Estates, commented: “We are incredibly proud to win such an important award for something that means so much to our organisation. To deliver this project, we had to overcome numerous obstacles including judicial reviews and nutrient neutrality issues between gaining consent and being able to commence the build. In that four-year period, costs doubled.

“Whilst the Section 106 compelled us to spend £600,000 but with costs increasing, we funded the entirety of the project totaling £1.5 million. Whilst we had no obligation to do this, for us it was about doing the right thing to deliver a community project we’re incredibly proud of, in an area we live and work in as a team.”

“This centre will enable the builders of the future to learn how to deliver what we strive for in every project – a home to be proud of – and a home in which our customers feel safe and happy.”

Graham Razey, Chief Executive Officer of EKC Group, added: “As a Group, we are committed to addressing skills gaps and ensuring businesses have the talented employees they need to thrive, so we’re incredibly proud of the training centre at Hersden. The centre will support employers in the civil engineering sector, enabling them to access the skilled staff they need to continue to flourish and grow.

“The project marks the culmination of a lot of hard work over several years, and we are very appreciative of everything that Quinn Estates has done in delivering our new centre despite the escalating costs. It is important to recognise the massive social impact that this will have, giving young people the opportunity to build great careers in a growing sector.”
